Thomas graduated from Eisenhower High School and attended Smith Elementary as a child. Smith Elementary was known as Inwood Elementary at the time. After earning a degree in Interdisciplinary Studies from Prairie View A&M University, Ms. Thomas began her teaching career at Smith Elementary in 1992. She has spent twenty-nine of the past thirty years at Smith and has been Smith’s Teacher of the Year. She has served as a teacher, math skills specialist, testing coordinator and writing specialist. For one year she served as the Title 1 Program Director. Ms. Thomas also earned her Masters in Educational Administration from Prairie View A&M University. She assumed her current role as assistant principal in 2008.

In her spare time, Ms. Thomas enjoys horseback riding, baking, camping, spending time with family and traveling. She is curious about disparities in our healthcare system, dreams, the universe and creation.

Some of her favorite books for children include Danny and the Dinosaur, Hansel and Gretel, and The Three Billy Goats Gruff. She also includes Maya Angelou’s I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings and The Scarlet Letter among her favorite books.

As the Counselor at Smith Elementary, I enjoy watching students grow academically, socially, and emotionally. This year, students are more aware of their emotions and they understand how to express them in a variety of ways. When I am not at school, my favorite pastimes are reading and listening to podcasts.
